women with rosacea before and after

Rosacea is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that primarily affects the face. It causes redness and visible blood vessels in your face. It may also produce small, red bumps. These signs and symptoms may flare up for a period of weeks to months and then diminish for a while. Rosacea can be mistaken for acne, other skin problems, or natural ruddiness.

The exact cause of rosacea is unknown, but it could be due to a combination of hereditary and environmental factors.

Various factors can aggravate rosacea by

increasing blood flow to the surface of the skin, including:

  • Hot foods or beverages

  • Spicy foods

  • Alcohol

  • Temperature extremes

  • Sunlight or wind

  • Emotions

  • Exercise

  • Drugs that dilate blood vessels, including some blood pressure medications

  • Some cosmetic and skin care products

Rosacea is most common in middle-aged women with fair skin, though it can affect anyone. There is also a genetic component, as those with a family history of rosacea are more likely to develop the condition.

While there's no cure for rosacea, treatments can control and reduce the signs and symptoms.

Symptoms of Rosacea

Rosacea causes skin redness, and its symptoms often begin with episodes of flushing. But other symptoms, such as burning and stinging sensations, pustules, and visible thin blood veins, can develop when the conditions worsen. Rosacea sometimes shows up as raised red bumps on the face.

Symptoms can come and go.
